Camping Trip

Great posts, looks like everyone is doing cool stuff. I'm on my new schedule now so what does that mean...planning trips of course. Next up is Moran State Park on Orcas Island. Anyone been there before? Brad and I are setting up camp 5/21-5/23. We got a spot that looks close to the water so if the weather is decent it should be a fun time.

Here's a few pictures I found on the internets.

Looks like the park entrance.
A nice looking lake with a dock like structure.
What is the deal with that tower? Why is it there? Do they still use it? Maybe they sell hot dogs. We will find the answers.

  1. I've camped at Moran back when I was a kid going to Camp Orkila. We did some off camp, camping there. It's a great place. From the lake, you can hike up Mt. Constitution, where the views of the area, and other islands are fantastic. Yeah, it's a pretty steep trail, but I did it back in the day, so you guys should be able to pull it off. Or, you can wuss out and drive up. Let me know what way you choose.
Up top, there is a stone observation tower, and nearby, you'll see antennas for KVOS and some FM stations. If you look carefully, you;ll find a Coast and Geodetic survey marker. Those markers always give me a sense of permanence that years and years go by, yet those markers are valid, and will be so for decades to come.
There are a couple of towns on Orcas, Eastsound (Bigger) and Orcas, where the ferry lands. Eastsound has some shops that may be interesting.
If you have time to visit ol' Camp Orkila, it'd be on the map, close to the Orca Island airport.
    Have Fun!
